This essay was written by YO-YO Ma who is a cellist and songwriter with over 17 grammy awards. YO-YO Ma continues with the accolades also earning the national medal of the arts and the presidential medal of freedom. The purpose of reading this text was perfectly summed up by Ma when he said “The arts teach us that there is something that connects us all and is bigger than each of us”. I think that is what he wanted to get out of this and with me going into this reading with all my prior knowledge on the importance of arts I listened and really took that message in. I think his scope was being an artist and he knows he cannot let arts purpose die. There is an importance to art that nowadays not to many people see and he is trying to stop it.
