Rough Draft of Second Essay:

Art and science are two key subjects that individuals should be pushing in school systems. We should not be placing art and sciences against each other. In fact, we should be finding a way for them to be taught together and intertwine. In the grand scheme of things, both art and science positively affect the students and are both equally as important as the other. Science and art are both humans attempts to understand and describe the world around us. Although they have different traditions, methods and audiences, the motivations and goals are fundamentally the same. Yo-Yo Ma’s essay attempts to teach the readers that art is very important for a child to possess knowledge, empathy and understanding as he or she grows older. Physicist, Niels Bohr takes this one step further and explains how teaching both art and science together can potentially make the two benefit from the other. Lastly, physicist, Mark Boslough emphasizes the importance of science and why it can not be forgotten in the classroom. It is beneficial for the greater good of students to implement both art and sciences in an equal fashion to further expand their knowledge of life.

In today’s society it is easy to choose a career that will inevitably get you through life comfortably. Unfortunately, some school systems emphasize the idea of students mastering one form of a subject rather than acquiring a deep understanding of all subjects.  Due to the constant competition in education throughout the school system, schools primarily focus on STEM, which is science, technology, engineering and math. However, Ma believes that STEM should be changed to STEAM, which would represent science, technology, engineering, art and math. It is clear that our world is primarily science driven because technology is so advanced and effective these days. Adding art to the school systems will not only aid students in becoming well rounded, but it will also further push them to collaborate, learn disciplined imagination as well as flexible thinking, which ultimately leads to the, “capacity to innovate.” Arts focus primarily on high levels of cognitive reasoning. According to the advances in neurobiology, it is said that individuals have dual passageways. One passageway controls critical thinking while the other controls empathetic thinking. Yo Yo Ma states, “We are also aware that wise and balanced judgments results from integrating the critical and empathetic, taking emotions as well as reasoning into account.” In my opinion, to integrate both necessities of art and science further suggests that an individual will later become more well rounded and have more depth to their ability to critically think. Ma delves deeper into the reasoning as to why he believes art should be implemented in school systems when he states, “ To be able to put oneself in another’s shoes without prejudgement is an essential skill. Empathy comes when you understand something deeply through arts and literature and can thus make unexpected connections.”  It is especially important in today’s society to be able to reflect on oneself and not judge one another on the first encounter. School systems should implement arts because its core values are to teach individuals to understand different cultures and accept them for what they are.

To understand the worlds complexities to the fullest and search for absolute knowledge, one must have a basic understanding of all subjects. For individuals to completely understand something, they must be taught in a way that is beneficial to them. While Ma believes there should be a balance between both arts and sciences in school systems, Leher takes a different outlook. He believes there should be a distinction between both arts and sciences, but, individuals that excel in both professions should work together to further understand and learn about their career choice. Lehrer states, “Professionals in both science and the arts continually search for meaning by asking questions, experimenting, and communicating. Because of this commonality, [I] believe that art has the distinct ability to augment science. Leher is basically saying that science and art go hand in hand which will ultimately develop both subjects for the greater good. Leher’s article stresses the ideology of integrating the arts into the field of scientific research. He says, “In order to continue the search for absolute knowledge, Science needs the arts.” In other words, Lehrer wants individuals to know that scientists need to be able to form a partnership with artists in order to realize our true scope of existence. If integrating arts and sciences will further develop our knowledge of the world then there should be no excuses as to why we should should stop that.

Science has given human beings the chance to explore new horizons and further develop our understanding of the universes intricacies. Mark B. Bosloughs article speaks upon the importance of science and how it has developed and pushed us to where we are today. Boslough states, “Science is sometimes slow, but it always involves making educated guesses that eventually lead to testable predictions. Unfortunately…science is now under attack from many directions.” It is evident in today’s society the importance of science. Without science, human beings would not be able to survive as easily as we do today. Now, although I believe schools should integrate both arts and sciences, we should take it upon ourselves to not miss the importance of science and the effect it has on our lives today. Boslough makes it a point to stress the priority of science and how budget cuts in science departments will negatively affect the world. I do not think that saving money is worth the loss of knowledge that we could potentially gain. I believe that we should continue the funding to pass along the American tradition of a strong investment in scientific knowledge with the help of future generations. In today’s world, with all the resources we possess we need both art and science to work together to form new accurate ideas. Physicist Mark Boslough would disagree, as he writes in his essay, “We Must Protect U.S. Investment in Scientific Knowledge” that we need to protect science from biases based on emotions. He writes, “A good scientist does not allow personal feelings to get in the way of evidence.” It is evident that some individuals  believe that art could be used in scientific innovations. Artists use human emotions within their work while science tries to remain purely factual. Incorporating science and art together can lead to more creativity and new ideas allowing the two fields to work together to become stronger.

Art and science both have the ability to benefit my studies at the University of New England as well as my future career in Sports Management. As Ma has concluded in his article, art gives students the capabilities to understand the world as a whole as well as stopping pre-judgements. As I begin to meet new peers in my time at the University of New England, I will be better able to equip myself with the knowledge I have retained from the arts. Due to the business and athletic aspect of my future career in Sports Management, the science related portion will help me understand the concepts and reasoning for my major. Sports management is not only business but the understanding of the sports and the players which includes exercise and medical science. I will be able to take what I have learned from these articles and apply it to my everyday life, further pushing me to understand and search for absolute knowledge.

The potential of art and science being collaboratively taught together cannot be overlooked, the potential of the possibilities are exciting. When both the sciences and arts are taught together, not only does it help engage the mind to its fullest, but also creates a new understanding for what is being taught. Although art and science art normally taught separately, if our school systems integrate both subjects together, it will ultimately positively affect our students as well as the world we live in today.

The Effects of Integrating Art and Science in Sports Management

Art and science are two key subjects that individuals should be pushing in school systems. We should not be placing art and sciences against each other. In fact, we should be finding a way for them to be taught together and intertwine. In the grand scheme of things, both art and science positively affect the students and are both equally as important as the other. Science and art are both humans attempts to understand and describe the world around us. Although they have different traditions, methods and audiences, the motivations and goals are fundamentally the same. Sports management is the field of business dealing with sports and recreation. In the major of sports management, it is crucial to have a background in both arts and sciences. With a sports management degree, I could either become a game-day and event coordinator, athletics administrator, or financial and contract analyst. These options force me to become well-rounded in both the arts and sciences aspect in school. Yo-Yo Ma’s article attempts to teach the readers that art is very important for a child to possess knowledge, empathy and understanding as he or she grows older. Physicist, Niels Bohr takes this one step further and explains how teaching both art and science together can potentially make the two benefit from the other. Lastly, physicist, Mark Boslough emphasizes the importance of science and why it can not be forgotten in the classroom. It is beneficial for the greater good of sports management majors to implement both art and sciences in an equal fashion to further expand their knowledge of creativity and intelligence.

In today’s society it is easy to choose a career that is likely to get you through life comfortably. Unfortunately, some school systems emphasize the idea of students mastering one form of a subject rather than acquiring a deep understanding of all subjects. In the world of sports management it is important to have art and science implemented in a school system to ensure creativity as well as continuing to learn different branches of the sciences. Adding art to the school systems will not only aid students in becoming well rounded, but it will also further push them to collaborate, learn disciplined imagination as well as flexible thinking, which ultimately leads to the, “capacity to innovate.” My major will constantly have me focused on creating new ideas that will help others in the recreation world.  Arts focus primarily on high levels of cognitive reasoning. According to the advances in neurobiology, it is said that individuals have dual passageways. One passageway controls critical thinking while the other controls empathetic thinking. Critical thinking will allow me to create new ideas and systems in my field of choice. To be able to stand out in my career, I will need to learn how to be creative and learn to collaborate. If school systems teach this, my employers will know that I have a good background in arts that will further help me make decisions in my future career. School systems should implement arts because its core values are to teach individuals to understand different cultures, evoke creativity, teach individuals to think outside the box as well as collaborate easier.

To understand the worlds complexities to the fullest and search for absolute knowledge, one must have a basic understanding of all subjects. For individuals to completely understand something, they must be taught in a way that is beneficial to them. While Ma believes there should be a balance between both arts and sciences in school systems, Leher takes a different stand. He believes there should be a distinction between both arts and sciences, but, individuals that excel in both professions should work together to further understand and learn about their career choice. Although I agree with Leher, if I am actively searching for a job, I would want my employer to know that I am prepared to reach their creativity standards as well as their scientific knowledge standards. Leher himself states, “Professionals in both science and the arts continually search for meaning by asking questions, experimenting, and communicating. Because of this commonality, [I] believe that art has the distinct ability to augment science.” Leher is basically saying that science and art go hand in hand which will ultimately develop both subjects for the greater good. Leher’s article stresses the ideology of integrating the arts into the field of scientific research. In other words Lehrer believes, “In order to continue the search for absolute knowledge, Science needs the arts.” In other words, Leher wants individuals to know that scientists need to be able to form a partnership with artists in order to realize our true scope of existence. If integrating arts and sciences will further develop our knowledge of the world then there should be no excuses as to why we should should stop that. Every individual should have a deeper understanding of both arts and sciences so that they can expand and excel in their chosen career. If implementing these two subjects together will help me understand my major and further enhance my knowledge then there is no reason why these two subjects should be separated.

Science has given human beings the chance to explore new horizons and further develop our understanding of a specific career choice. Mark B. Bosloughs article speaks upon the importance of science and how it has developed and pushed us to where we are today. Boslough’s point is that, “Science is sometimes slow, but it always involves making educated guesses that eventually lead to testable predictions. Sports management revolves around individuals who recruit talent and manage their teams. Science is especially important in this field because it is a popular major. If an individual wants to excel at this career choice then they must understand the curriculum and expectation that the job expects one to uphold. Boslough states, “A good scientist does not allow personal feelings to get in the way of evidence.” Arts and sciences need to be incorporated in a sports management career choice to ensure the basic understanding of the curriculum at hand. It is evident that some individuals believe that art could be used in scientific innovations.  Artists use human emotions within their work while science tries to remain purely factual. Incorporating science and art together in the field of sports management can lead to more creativity and new ideas allowing to become a stronger and more competitive field.

Due to the business and athletic aspect of my future career in Sports Management, the science related portion will help me understand the concepts and reasoning of my major. Sports management is not only the business aspect but also the understanding of the sports and the players which includes exercise and medical science. I will be able to take what I have learned from these articles and apply it to my everyday life, further pushing me to understand and search for absolute knowledge.

The potential of art and science being collaboratively taught together cannot be overlooked. The potential of these possibilities are exciting. When both the sciences and arts are taught together, not only does it help engage the mind to its fullest, but also creates a new understanding for what is being taught. These subjects have the ability to grow from each other and make each other better. Although art and science are normally taught separately, if our school systems integrate both subjects together, it will ultimately positively affect my future career in sports management.
