The activism movement effective altruism do not see things the same way. In his post Rhy Southan said “ The idea that someone’s book, film, painting, or dance could be their way to reduce the worlds suffering struck [The EA]  as bizzarre”. Perhaps they have a point, not necessarily one painting or book is going to change the world as a whole but at the end of the day most if not all forms of art will have an effect on someone. Whether that be enjoying a movie made by one person or listening to music produced in an in-home studio, this can help makes someone’s day better. People in today’s society are slowly learning to appreciate handmade, homemade pieces of art rather than things mass-produced in factories. Also, later on Southan summarizes the effective altruism movement as “working hard to earn money and then giving as much of it as you can to the needy”. The EA’s  just want the needy to be helped, that is their main focus. It is understandable to see why they think art is a waste of time because a lot of money is put into movie production, theater and music when this money could be directly paying for those living under the poverty line.

Perhaps they have a point, not necessarily one painting or book is going to change the world as a whole but at the end of the day most, if not all forms of art, will have an effect on someone. Art has given a path for many people to overcome adversity and that is something the EAs will never be able to take that away. Whether that be enjoying a movie made by one person or listening to music produced in an in-home studio, this can help makes someone’s day better. People use art as an escape from the harsh realities of life. Art can help someone come to peace no matter what is going on around them. They see it as if say that money was put towards just the needy or they could decide how to use it, it would have make a lot more of a difference.

The movements that can come from art can not be overlooked even though not everyone sees art as a transformational experience. Like Zander said Art “is a story. It’s an unfolding of a story”. From beginning to end just like a story art will engage the readers thoughts throughout and get them to think for the deeper meaning. In all forms of art the creator gets to show their message to the world and the world can interpret it in anyway for their own thinking. Our society should invest more into art to truly reach the maximum potential that comes with all the benefits art has. Although art may not make as much of an impact as donating ten percent of your income but money cannot help someone depressed or hurt like the visual arts  and conceptual art.

  1. Matt,
This sentence, “Although art may not make as much of an impact as donating ten percent of your income money cannot help someone depressed or hurt like the visual arts and conceptual art.” reads like a strong claim sentence. Consider placing it at the top of a paragraph as opposed to the bottom. You are generating stronger sentences. Great work! Consider reading your work out loud. Your ear can be an amazing tool when it comes to catching certain mistakes.
